Getting Crafty: Show Off Your Seed Collection
My Simple Solution For Protecting & Displaying Your Cannabis Seed Collection (Without Having To Repackage Your Seeds)
This year's goal is to pop more seeds than I ever have.
As a result, I've spent quite a bit of time sifting through my vault, trying to find specific packs as well as just find what I have in general.
Also, when fellow growers are over, I'm prone to opening the vault to discuss and show off packs like a kid shows off trading cards during recess.
But pulling out a disorganized box of vac-sealed and ziplock'd packs hardly elicits the "oohs" and "aahs" a vault deserves.
I wanted to be proud to display my collection, and easily find what I was looking for.
And then there's the worry about proper storage?
Am I slowly killing these seeds I've invested in?
So, for the past few months, I've been casually searching for a seed storage solution.
Something that allowed me to store my seeds in a way that is organized for easy access, protected against the elements, and fun to flip through and share with fellow growers and seed collectors.
Most solutions required a new container or vial, which meant opening seed packs and repackaging.
If you've got a collection of tomato and cucumber seeds, that might not be the end of the world.
But with cannabis seeds, this is problematic:
Part of the collectible is the packaging.
Opening up the seed pack and repackaging removes part of the original presentation, which might also include valuable information on how the variety grows.
While you could keep the packaging organized separately, it's easier to keep the pack intact until you're ready to pop those seeds. An opened pack creates an opportunity for trust issues.
Due to the unregulated nature of the cannabis seed industry, there have been instances of shady characters conducting shady business by swapping seeds.
Unknowing buyers purchase a pack of seeds thinking it is one genetic, and end up with whatever the seller swapped it with. For this reason, many packs now come with void stickers and labels, that, once opened, are clearly marked.
If, as a collector, you wanted to sell your packs in the future rather than grow them, voided seals could called into question the value of the pack.
If you're never going to part with your seeds, and you don't care about the packaging, then you can stop reading now and buy one of many simple storage solutions available in garden stores and websites.
If you care about the packaging and don't want to void the value of your seeds, keep reading.
As a packaging geek who has been known to save limited edition labels and boxes, I had no intentions of opening, voiding, and repackaging my seeds.
After a few dabs, I headed to the local hobby store to search for craft organizers that could be repurposed for my seed collection. Here's what I came up with:
My Simple Solution To Seed Vault Display & Storage
The 3 biggest problems seed collectors face are:
Organization - Finding the right seeds shouldn't be a treasure hunt. There must be an alternative to sifting through a cluttered container or scrolling through an exhaustive list.
Protection - Viability is vital. How can you shield your seeds from environmental threats without removing their original packaging, ensuring their longevity?
Display - Your collection is impressive; it deserves the spotlight. Like a collector’s edition, your seeds should be displayed in a way that’s both engaging and accessible.
This solution addresses each of these issues for <$100.
